Home Sweet Home (Part II) And Other Thoughts

Published by David under House, Life, Podcasts

Well, we’ve gone past the closing stage and the moving stage and are working on getting the house in “order”.  Rooms have been painted and decorated, lawns have been mowed, raked, and fertilized, basements have been sheetrocked, (okay, only one lawn and one basement) and animals have been acclimated to their surroundings.  Nanuuq has definitely been enjoying her freedom and as ususal, is nice enough to let us know when anything is amiss outside.  Nikki resides mostly in the bedroom and while this wouldn’t normally be a big deal, the bedroom is upstairs and she “doesn’t do stairs” (as Renee and I tell people) in the descending manner.  Except for the five steps leading to the yard from the deck.  As long as there’s light.  And it’s not wet.  Yeah, she’s a little bit spoiled…  Tiger, Silver, and Mush are behaving themselves and will soon be comfortable walking around in other areas of the house that are not the basement.

As I’m told, there’s always an adjustment period in getting settled in a new house.  So far our adjustment has been needing a new washing machine, finding out that the previous owner used laundry detergent in the dishwasher, and the most fun (seriously) was the flooding in the basement thanks in part to the eight days of rain we had in the northeast.  The flooding started after more than 24 hours of rainfall and the ground had become quite saturated.  Another factor was the hole that was jackhammered to make room for the sump pump we bought to use with the water softener that we bought.  Since the hole wasn’t filled in prior to the rain, the water came in through the opening (as well as some cracks where the rock was used as part of the foundation) and filled the basement a couple of inches.  I’ll add that Renee and I responded remarkedly well to the situation and the water was shunted back outside in a matter of minutes.  The sump pump continued doing its job as the rain continued, but the basement stayed fairly dry for the rest of the week.

I hope to have some pictures up of the house (and of the beautiful scenery between the house and parkway (and possibly of the parkway) - man, I love the fall) soon.  I’d also love to ramble on about some of the things that keep me occupied while working on things around the house.  Podcasts, mostly.  One of my favorites is Bruce Rosenberger’s KomicsKast.  And it’s thanks to Bruce that I wrote this entry today, which is the least I can do since he’s given a few hours of something for me to listen to.  So, Bruce, here’s to you!

Thanks for reading.  I sould be back soon.  And I hope to have the comments page fixed soon.

One response so far
